History: The Clowns began their long sojourn in Black baseball as the traveling Miami Clowns, and used comedy routines as part of their act. But it was all straight baseball once they became a member of the Negro American League in 1943, and in 1952 they were joined by a young slugger named Henry Aaron (#5). The Clowns survived as a touring team for decades after the demise of Negro leagues baseball.

History: The Indianapolis Clowns began as a barnstorming team known for their pre-game entertainment as much as for their ball skills. Once they joined the Negro American League they focused on baseball and won the NAL title in 1950. History: In 1953, the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League were looking for a new second baseman to replace their previous second baseman, a teenager named Hank Aaron, who had just been signed by the Milwaukee Braves. Like other Negro League ballclubs, the Clowns were struggling after the 1947 signings of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby to Major League clubs opened the door for all of the best black ballplayers to leave the Negro Leagues for better opportunities in the big leagues.

History: There were no fewer than four Greenvilles in organized baseball in 1939, all in the South. The Buckshots from Mississippi played in the Cotton States League. The Lions of Alabama were in the Alabama-Florida League. The Spinners played in the South Atlantic League. Our jersey is from the Greenville Greenies, winners of the 1939 Coastal Plain League pennant. The Greenies were managed by Rube Wilson, who went on to scout for the Chicago Cubs for thirty years.
